Recommended Books

There are a lot of books (ranging from beginner to advanced topics) out there to read, but the following books are the ones that I recommend to my family and friends who are interested in learning about personal finance, passive index investing and passive real estate investing.

Personal Finance/Investing

  1. The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J Stanley, PhD and William D Danko, PhD – I stumbled upon this book after I became an attending physician, and I am very grateful that I did.   The main message from the book is the majority of wealthy people do not look wealthy.  Real wealth is NOT buying a bunch of stuff and looking like you’re rich.  It’s about net worth.   I particularly enjoyed the comparison between  Drs. North and South.    After being in practice as an attending and seeing first-hand how physicians spend their money, I can assure you that Drs. North and South are accurate representations.
  2. Millionaire Teacher  by Andrew Hallam – Andrew is a Canadian teacher who worked overseas in Asia.  If you only had time to read 1 book on this list, then this book would be my recommendation.   The beauty of this book is that Andrew has read a large volume of personal finance/investing books, and has summarized the most important points in easy to read chapters.  This book also describes his path to becoming a (multi)millionaire on a teacher’s salary.  He also details why he became an index-investor even after outperforming the S&P index for many years with his own stock picking
  3. The White Coat Investor by James M Dahle, MD –  If you are a medical student, resident or physician, then you need to read his book.  This should be required reading for all medical students, in my humble opinion.
  4. The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John C Bogle – We owe this man a big debt of gratitude for establishing his company Vanguard.   He went against the finance establishment and persisted with his low-cost index funds.   After I learned about index-investing in 2011, I am happy to see that low-cost ETFs have now become more popular here in Canada.  His book details the research/data that favours low-cost index funds vs actively managed funds.

Real Estate Investing

  1. Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T Kiyosaki – Majority of real estate investors have read this book sometime in their investing career.   For many real estate investors, this book is what sparked their interest in real estate investing.  This book describes how a real estate investor views income and wealth compared to rest of the population.
  2. Real Estate Investing in Canada by Don R Campbell – Good book for Canadians interested in learning about real estate investing, however, it does try to sell you into taking their REIN seminars
  3. Real Estate Joint Ventures by Don R Campbell and Russell Westcott – This book is for teaching active real estate investors about how to attract and structure Joint Venture deals with passive real estate investors.  If you are a passive real estate investor, like myself, you should also read this book to understand the mindset of your partner (the active real estate investor) when it comes to partnering up with them in Joint Ventures deals.
  4. Why The Rich are Getting Richer by Robert T Kiyosaki – Not the best book, but did have a few good points related to real estate investing.   The use of good debt to one’s advantage is essential to learn and be comfortable with in real estate investing.   Read his case example at the end of his book with his investment in an apartment building to get a feel for the power of wealth building in real estate investing.
